Metropica developer receives key approval

May 14, 2014 – The Real Deal

Sunrise commissioners allow $1 billion project to move forward.

The developer of Metropica in western Sunrise got a critical approval from the city’s Local Planning Agency on Tuesday.

Sunrise commissioners, who comprise the agency, unanimously endorsed the $1 billion project proposed by Joseph Kavana. They accepted a development agreement that outlines how the massive project must be constructed over the next 10 years. Metropica’s first phase includes 1,250 high-rise residences, nearly 500,000 square feet of commercial space and 150,000 square feet of offices on 28 acres.

The entire project would have as many as 2,500 condos, 300 townhomes and about 800,000 square feet of office space, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

“I would call it a dream community,”Kavana said. “It’s a self-contained community where the residents who live there will have access to their own amenities.”

Kavana still has to get city commissioners to approve a rezoning of the Metropica site. [Sun- Sentinel] — Eric Kalis
